Södra Wood’s Värö sawmill speeds up its new planner line with Finscan grading system

Södra Wood’s Värö sawmill speeds up its new planner line with Finscan grading system

The long-term cooperation between MiCROTEC and Södra Wood will continue when MiCROTEC delivers a new Finscan grading system to Södra Wood’s Värö sawmill. The delivery is part of Södra Wood’s development project, where a new CLT plant will be built in Värö. The need for planed material will increase with the new plant, and a second planner line will be built alongside the existing one in 2022. MiCROTEC’s Finscan NOVA-N grading system enables the high speed of the new planner line when sawn timber pieces do not need to be turned. The maximum speed on the line is 240 pieces per minute.

The Finscan quality system measures and optimizes sawn timber in accordance with Scandinavian sorting rules and can also be used for strength grading into C and T classes. The measuring device also makes it possible to sort according to the ALS standard for the North American market. At the older Södra Värö planner line, ALS sorting has been done with BoardMaster HD equipment for about 10 years.

Installations of the new Finscan meter will begin in the fall of 2022 and will be commissioned in the spring of 2023.

MiCROTEC to deliver three Finscan scanners to ULK Group’s Pinega sawmill for dry sorting

MiCROTEC to deliver three Finscan scanners to ULK Group’s Pinega sawmill for dry sorting

MiCROTEC (formerly FinScan) will continue its close cooperation with the Russian ULK Group in delivering three Finscan sorting systems for dry sorting departments at ULK’s new Pinega sawmill to be constructed in the Arkhangelsk region. The Finscan system is an advanced sawn lumber scanner that utilises Buzzard® AI software to detect defects in wood. Thanks to the Buzzard® app, the system detects knots and rot with extremely high precision, and therefore significantly improves the sawn lumber yield. The Pinega sawmill is expected to begin operations in 2023 and manufacture sawn softwood and pellets.

MiCROTEC’s order is part of a sizeable agreement between Lahti-based Jartek and ULK Group on the delivery of sawn lumber processing lines. Jartek will deliver four green sorting lines and three dry sorting lines for sawn lumber processing.

Once complete, the Pinega sawmill will be the largest in northern Europe. The sawmill will handle over two million cubic metres of logs per year, resulting in approximately one million cubic metres of ready sawn lumber and 600 tonnes of pellets.

FinScan Web Report monitors your production in green and dry sorting

FinScan Web Report monitors your production in green and dry sorting

Our NOVA grading system scans the boards on a green or dry sorting line from 10 different directions and accurately determines wood defects as well as the dimensions and quality of the sawn timber pieces. Production can be monitored in real time or for specific time periods in the FinScan Web Report. If the saw uses a Finscan MOISTSPY moisture meter, the reporting tool will also tell you the moisture of each board, and the strength classes for users of our strength grading software.

FinScan Web Report is available from every computer in the sawmill’s network, ie also remotely from anywhere. Reporting can be viewed by multiple users simultaneously without disturbing each other. Due to the open interface, the reporting tool can be integrated with the most common sawmill production planning systems such as PiiMega or Trimble.

Finland’s largest private sawn timber producer and sawn timber supplier Versowood uses FinScan’s new Web Report for both in green and dry sorting plants.

– From Web Report, we monitor, among other things, the quality distribution, the result of the scanning, the lumber measures and trimmings. The reporting tool is also a key part of our production planning process, says Timo Lehtonen, Versowood’s Quality Manager.

– In the new FinScan Web Report, the necessary information can be found quickly and in the same place. The tool is easy to use, and being online and not on a production machine is a big deal. Production is not disrupted and the program can be used by several users at the same time via the browser. We have been participating in developing the product and have been able to influence according to our needs, says Lehtonen of the benefits of the Web Report.

Our grading system has now also been approved for planed timber strength grading

Our grading system has now also been approved for planed timber strength grading

The FinScan’s timber grading systems has been approved for strength grading of planed goods in accordance with the EN 14081 standard at the meeting of the CEN TC124 / WG2 / TG1 group. Prior to this, strength grading has been possible for green and dry sawn timber.

Moreover, FinScan’s approval now allows for more robust dimensions. This means, for example, that spruce can be strength graded up to a thickness of 110 mm and pine up to 82 mm.

FinScan’s strength grading is entirely software-based and can be installed directly on all NOVA systems and on almost all of the old HD systems in use without any changes to the electronics or sawmill mechanics. This year, software-based mechanical strength grading has already been approved at nine sawmills in Finland and Sweden, with the process currently underway at a 10th sawmill.

FinScan Strength grading

  • Machine strength grading in accordance with EN 14081
    • Strength grading with NOVA up to class C40 and with HD up to class C30
    • T-classes possible up to class T22
    • Can be used for green sorting, final sorting and planed timber sorting
  • Strength grading in accordance with visual standards (INSTA 142, BS 4978)
  • Visual grading of structural lumber in accordance with North American ALS/CLS standards
  • Visual grading of glulam products (JAS)
