FinScan machine vision systems for the Metsä Fibre new Rauma sawmill

Member of Metsä Group, Metsä Fibre is building the most modern sawmill in the world to the city of Rauma in the west coast of Finland. Total value of investments is approximately EUR 200 million. FinScan Oy is participating in this large-scale project by supplying sawn timber quality scanning and optimization systems.

The planned annual production will be about 750,000 cubic meters of pine sawn goods. In terms of technology and efficiency, it will be a pioneer in the world. The use of machine vision and artificial intelligence at different stages of the sawmill process is a major innovation, and similar technology is not yet used anywhere else in the sawmill industry.

BoardMaster NOVA-N GS4-220 quality systems for both green sorting plants, as well as BoardMaster NOVA-N FS4-220 quality system with MoistSpy-4 moisture meter for dry sorting plant. The measuring systems are scaled so that each of them can scan and optimize more than 200 pieces of sawn timber per minute. The deliveries include comprehensive software packages.

  • Metsä Fibre and FinScan have been cooperating on sawn timber quality grading systems for a long time, and the supply agreement now signed strengthens clearly our position as the world’ s leading player in its field, says Allan Flink, President and CEO of FinScan Oy.
  • The agreement is a continuation of a long-term partnership. FinScan’s quality systems meet our goals for safety, efficiency, reliability and quality – we will continue this development work together, says Harri Haapaniemi, project director of Metsä Fibre Rauma sawmill project.
